The essential Korean skincare routine: every step, explained
Share
A Korean skincare routine is a sequence of products applied from thinnest to thickest, in an order that maximises hydration and barrier support before any actives. The essential morning routine is 5 steps: cleanse, toner, serum, moisturiser, SPF. The essential evening is 6: double cleanse, toner, essence, eye, moisturiser. Total time: about five minutes each way once you've got the hang of it.
Here's what each step does, why the order matters, and our pick for each.
The Korean approach
Korean skincare is structured, but not for the sake of complexity. The order matters because it changes how well each product actually works.
Two principles hold the whole routine together.
Thinnest to thickest. Watery products absorb into the skin fastest. Richer, oilier products form a seal on top. Applying a rich cream first would block the watery serum underneath from getting in properly, so lighter goes first, heavier goes last.
Hydrate and support the barrier before treating concerns. Every Korean routine has multiple hydrating layers before it gets to any strong actives. This is why K-beauty tends to be gentler on skin than actives-heavy Western routines, and why people who switch across often see their skin calm down within a few weeks.
You don't need to do all of it. What follows is the essential version. Skip what doesn't apply, add what does.
Morning routine
Five steps. Fast, focused on hydration and sun protection. Actives generally live in the evening routine, not this one.
Step 1: Cleanse
The morning cleanse is gentle. Your skin doesn't have makeup or SPF on it, just whatever your night cream and pillow left behind. A water rinse is fine for many people. If you want a proper cleanse, use something mild and non-stripping.
Our pick: Round Lab 1025 Dokdo Cleanser (£9.99). Mild, creamy foam cleanser with ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and mineral-rich sea water from Ulleungdo. Gentle enough for daily use without stripping, suits sensitive skin.
Step 2: Toner
Modern K-beauty toners aren't the astringent tighteners some people remember from Western skincare in the 90s. They're hydration boosters, applied on damp skin after cleansing to add moisture and prep for what comes next.
Our pick: Anua Rice 70 Glow Milky Toner (£18.49). A milky, watery toner built on a 71% rice bran water base. Hydrating with a subtle brightening angle from niacinamide and arbutin. Feels like nothing on the skin, which is the point.
Step 3: Serum
Serum is where you address a specific concern. In the morning, most people want hydration, soothing and a bit of brightening rather than aggressive actives. Retinol and strong exfoliants belong to the evening routine.
Our pick: Beauty of Joseon Glow Serum: Propolis + Niacinamide (£10.39). Propolis for soothing, niacinamide for tone and pore support. One of the most beginner-friendly K-beauty serums out there: cheap, well-tolerated, and does a bit of everything without pushing the skin.
Step 4: Moisturiser
The moisturiser seals in everything you've applied so far and provides a base for your sunscreen. In the morning you generally want something lighter than your evening cream.
Our pick: Purito Mighty Bamboo Panthenol Cream (£15). 10% panthenol, bamboo water base, no fragrance, no essential oils. Suits sensitive skin without being so light that it doesn't do anything.
Step 5: SPF
Non-negotiable. Daily SPF prevents most of the visible ageing people spend money trying to reverse later. Korean SPF is genuinely nicer to wear than most Western sunscreen, which is a big part of why K-beauty converts stick with it.
Our pick: SKIN1004 Hyalu-Cica Sun Serum (£11.99). SPF50+ PA++++. Watery, no cast, no smell, sits invisibly under makeup. Our everyday workhorse SPF.
Evening routine
Six steps. This is where the deeper work happens, most of the actives live, and skin actually repairs itself overnight.
Step 1: First cleanse (oil)
The evening starts with an oil-based cleanser to break down SPF, makeup, and the oil-soluble grime from the day. Massaged into dry skin, then emulsified with a splash of water, then rinsed. Our double cleansing guide covers the technique properly if you want more detail.
Our pick: SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Light Cleansing Oil (£13.50). Light-textured cleansing oil with centella for sensitive skin, emulsifies cleanly, no residue.
Step 2: Second cleanse (water-based)
The second cleanser removes what the oil couldn't (sweat, water-soluble dirt, any residue from the first cleanser). This is what gets you to properly clean skin.
Our pick: Anua 8 Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Gentle Foaming Cleanser (£12.99). Foaming cleanser with eight molecular weights of hyaluronic acid, so skin doesn't feel tight after rinsing.
Step 3: Toner
Same toner as morning. Anua Rice 70 Glow Milky Toner. Applied the same way, to damp skin after cleansing.
Step 4: Essence
The essence step is where K-beauty diverges most from Western routines. It's a hydrating, treatment-lite layer between toner and serum, and it's often the most impactful step in the whole routine. In a beginner routine, this is usually the "hero" product.
Our pick: COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence (£11.75). 96% snail secretion filtrate. The K-beauty icon for good reason. Hydrating, supports repair, suits every skin type. If any K-beauty product deserves the "start here" title, it's this.
Step 5: Eye care
Under-eye skin is thinner and needs its own product. Eye care is optional in a truly minimal routine, but adding an eye product from your 30s onward is worth it for fine line and dark circle prevention. Our under-eye guide covers the format choices in more detail.
Our pick: VT PDRN Reedle Shot Eye Lifter (£16.50). Peptide and PDRN-focused eye serum with a metal vibrating applicator that boosts circulation as you apply. Genuinely one of the more interesting eye products in the category.
Step 6: Moisturiser
The evening moisturiser is richer than your morning one. This is what seals everything in and gives skin the barrier it needs to repair overnight.
Our pick: Beauty of Joseon Dynasty Cream (£14). BoJ's original and best-selling moisturiser. Ceramides, ginseng, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid and squalane in a creamy, deeply nourishing formula. The reliable all-rounder for an evening routine.
You don't need all of it
The routine above is the essential version, not the maximum version. Very few people do all 11 steps every day, and you don't need to either.
The absolute minimum for anyone starting out:
- Morning: water rinse, moisturiser, SPF
- Evening: oil cleanser, second cleanser, moisturiser
That's a 5-step routine that already covers 80% of what matters. Add a toner and essence next. Add serums after that. Add eye care when you feel like you want it. Layer up over months, not days.
The mistake people make is trying to do all 11 steps on day one, buying a full lineup, and then getting overwhelmed and dropping the routine entirely. Start small. Build the habit first, then add products as you actually feel the need.
What to skip until later
A few things beginners often add too early. Better to hold off on all of these until your basic routine is solid:
- Retinoids (retinol, retinal). Powerful ingredient but stressful for skin. Wait until you've got 2-3 months of solid barrier care behind you, then introduce slowly.
- Chemical exfoliants (AHA, BHA). Same reasoning. Barrier first, exfoliation second.
- Vitamin C at high concentrations. Great long-term but often irritating for people who haven't built up tolerance. Start with a gentle derivative if you want to try it.
- Sheet masks daily. Two or three a week is plenty. Daily masking often causes irritation rather than helping.
- Toner pads with actives. The plain hydrating toner is what you want to start with. Toner pads with AHA/BHA are for later.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a full K-beauty routine take?
Morning: about 5 minutes once you're used to it. Evening: about 7 to 10 minutes. Less than most people spend on their coffee or their commute planning.
Do I have to wait between each layer?
No. Apply the next product as soon as the previous one has stopped feeling wet on the skin (usually 30 seconds or so). You don't need to wait five minutes per step.
What order do I use if I have multiple serums?
Thinnest to thickest. Water-based first, then thicker serums, then any oil-based ones. If you have two similar-texture serums, use the one targeting your primary concern first.
Can I use K-beauty products alongside my Western skincare?
Yes. Most K-beauty products layer fine with Western brands. The main risk is doubling up on actives without realising (e.g. your Western moisturiser has retinol and your K-beauty serum also has retinol). Read ingredient lists and don't stack the same active from two sources.
How long before I see results?
Hydration and barrier improvements: 1 to 2 weeks. Pigmentation and dark spots: 8 to 12 weeks. Fine lines and anti-ageing: 3 to 6 months for anything visible. K-beauty is a long game, not a quick fix.
Do men need a different routine?
No, skincare isn't gendered. The same routine works for anyone. Our men's guide to K-beauty covers this in more detail.
Is 11 steps too many?
For most people, yes. Start with 4 or 5. Add more only when you actually want to. The routine above is the maximum essential set, not what you have to do every day.
