Medicube AGE-R Booster Pro X2: what it is and what it actually does

The new Medicube AGE-R Booster Pro X2 has just landed with us. As far as we can tell we're the first independent UK shop to have it in stock, which we don't mention to be smug, just to flag that if you've been waiting for this one, it's here.

This is a longer post than usual, because it's a £233 device and anyone considering one deserves a clear-eyed read first. What the technology actually does, what's new in the X2 versus the original Booster Pro, who it suits, and where we'd manage expectations.

What AGE-R is

AGE-R is Medicube's line of at-home skincare devices. The line is built around delivering some of the things you'd otherwise go to an aesthetician for, without the appointment or the recurring cost. It ranges from single-purpose devices (an LED mask, for example) to multi-function flagships. The Booster Pro is the flagship, and the X2 is the new generation of it.

What's new in the X2

Compared with the original Booster Pro:

  • 2X power output and 2X electrodes. A stronger signal across all modes, plus a dual-head design that gives more skin contact per pass.
  • 1.3x larger device head. Covers more skin per pass, so sessions are faster.
  • Three new modes. Mask Mode for use over sheet masks, Dual Mode that runs two modes at once, and AI Mode that recommends a routine via the AGE-R app.

The LED palette has also gone from five colours to seven, and intensity now tops out at level 6 (the original maxed at level 5).

If you already have the original Booster Pro and use it regularly, the X2 is a worthwhile upgrade. If you don't have one yet, the X2 is now the version to buy.

The seven modes, in plain English

Seven modes plus six intensity levels. Four are the core treatment modes carried over from the original Booster Pro (now with upgraded power output). Three are new to the X2.

The four core treatment modes

Booster Mode (electroporation). The core mode and the device's namesake. Brief electrical pulses temporarily open microscopic channels in your skin, which lets larger molecules in your serums (peptides, hyaluronic acid, growth factors) penetrate deeper than they would on their own. Pair it with your favourite essence or ampoule. No needles, no downtime. No separate conductive gel needed; it works with whatever skincare you've already got on.

MC Mode (microcurrent). Very low-level electrical current that stimulates the facial muscles underneath your skin. The effect is a temporary lifted, more contoured look. Effects build with consistent use, similar to how working out works on any other muscle.

Derma Shot Mode (EMS). Stronger electrical muscle stimulation than microcurrent, aimed at skin definition and contouring. Think of it as MC Mode's more muscular sibling.

Air Shot Mode. Conceptually similar to VT's Reedle Shot products, but done electrically. Brief electrical pulses create micro-pathways in the top layer of the skin (no physical needles), which preps the skin to absorb what you put on next. Used on clean, dry skin BEFORE applying any other products, twice or three times a week for about five minutes. The mode that most directly targets pore appearance and texture.

The three new modes in the X2

Mask Mode. Probably the most genuinely useful new addition for K-beauty buyers. Designed for use over a sheet mask. It uses high-frequency micro-vibrations (around 792,000 per minute) to break the essence in a mask down into much finer particles and drive them into the skin while you massage. Medicube developed this mode after noticing TikTok users were applying Booster Mode over sheet masks, which isn't what it's designed for. If you're a sheet mask person, this is a real step up from just letting one sit on your face.

Dual Mode. Runs two of the above modes simultaneously, using different electrodes in the upper and lower heads, which cuts session time roughly in half. Useful if you're going to use the device but don't want to spend twenty minutes on it.

AI Mode. The AGE-R app reads your skin condition and goals and builds a recommended routine. For people who'd rather not work out which mode to use when, this is the answer.

Who this is for

Honest take: an at-home device only earns its place if you'll actually use it. The X2 is the right buy for:

  • Someone with a consistent skincare routine who wants to extend what their existing actives are doing.
  • Someone with concerns around firmness, glow, or texture that they're willing to address at home over months rather than weeks.
  • Someone who'll use it three or four times a week, every week. Once a fortnight will not get you there.
  • Someone who wants into the AGE-R line and didn't get to the original Booster Pro.

It's not the right product for someone looking for a quick fix.

It's also not for everyone, full stop. If you have a pacemaker or any implanted electronic device, or you're pregnant, the electrical stimulation modes (MC, EMS, Booster) shouldn't be used. Check the Medicube documentation for the full safety list before ordering.

What to pair it with

The Booster Mode is doing absorption work, so what you put on underneath matters. Hydrating essences, peptide serums, PDRN formulas, and panthenol-heavy ampoules are all good matches, because they're all things you want to get deeper than they ordinarily would.

One important rule: don't use the X2 in the same session as retinol, tretinoin, or exfoliating acids (AHAs or BHAs). The Booster and Air Shot modes both significantly increase how much your skin lets through, and combining that with strong actives is a fast route to real irritation. Use the device one evening and your acids the next. Both will still do their job.

The honest bit

Devices like this are about cumulative effect. You won't see anything dramatic after one session, possibly not after a week. After a month of consistent use, most people notice their skincare absorbs better and skin feels firmer to the touch. After three months, the effects on tone and texture become more visible. After six, firmness changes are the bit people stop you to comment on.

The reason we like the AGE-R line as a category is that it sits at a price point where the tech is real but the device is still attainable. Clinic microcurrent and EMS sessions in London cost £80 to £150 a go. The X2 is £233, and you own it.
